Play
Therapy

Play has been recognised as a critical aspect of a child's development, for many years. Play therapy is a form of psychotherapy designed primarily for children and can assist children to process their own emotions, identify concerns and develop solutions and strategies.

Play therapy can assist children in developing trust in the counsellor and the therapeutic relationship, allowing children to become more creative and expressive in their play.

Benefits of play therapy include the development of;

  • Self respect

  • Empathy and respect for others

  • Social skills

  • Stronger relationships with family and peers

  • Coping strategies and creative problem-solving skills

  • Acceptance of their own behaviours

Play therapy can also be used to help children alleviate anxiety and fears and identify traumas that can be both conscious and repressed. It encourages the use and development of language and fine and gross motor skills.

Play therapy sessions vary in length from thirty to fifty minutes and can be individual or in small group sessions. These sessions can commence following an initial individual psychotherapy session.
